THE SUGAR TAX: WHAT IT MEANS FOR RESTAURANTS AND THEIR CONSUMERS

The British government has stated that as of 6th April 2018, they will be implementing a sugar tax of 18-24 pence per litre to deter people from purchasing drinks with added sugar. This is part of the governments plan to tackle diabetes and obesity which is currently at 29% and is estimated to grow to 34% by 2025.

Studies have shown that whilst the recommended maximum daily sugar intake is between 5 and 7 sugar cubes, on average typical energy drinks, including Lucozade contains 13 sugar cubes.

The price increase will be applied to manufacturers, who can decide whether they pass this onto consumers, however this is also likely to affect you when you dine out at restaurants.
